Video game development and publishing firm Codemasters today announced that the development of their in house game engine, titled EGO Game Technology, is now complete. This new game engine is the continuation of the technology that began with the Neon game engine that went on to become the foundation of the company’s highly lauded offroad racing game DiRT. The new EGO Engine has been in development for over three years at the Codemasters Central Technology unit and has already been put to use in the development of Codemaster’s latest project GRID to be the power source for the game’s new damage and physics system along with the large in game environments that will be found in Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising.
The Chief Technology Officer for Codemasters Studios, Byran Marshall, offered these words regarding the new EGO Engine: “With the EGO Engine we have technology that is specific to our needs and one that doesn’t force us to compromise”. Mr. Marshall went onto add that this was particularly true in the case of Operation Flashpoint 2 because “we simply could not fulfill the ambitions we have for the game with any off-the-shelf middleware; certainly not one that enabled us to develop across the major fifth generation consoles simultaneously with PC.” The CEO of Codemasters, Rod Cousens, stated that due to the EGO Engine the company is “in a position to rev mature middleware technology to get the most from today’s leading game systems” and that “The EGO Engine is already making its mark on the industry with award-winning, multi-million-unit selling titles."
